Goals for July

It's July 1st, which means it's time to reflect on the month of June and the progress I made on my goals as well as set new goals for this month!

June's Goals

  1. Get into the 180's

  2. 15 runs in June

  3. 90 oz water per day

  4. Track w/integrity EVERY DAY!!

I'm happy to report on each of these goals!! WOOHOO!

Get into the 180's

I'm happy to report that as of this morning I'm fluctuating between 189 lbs and 188.4 lbs!  I recorded the higher of the two for HappyScale!  This means I met my milestone 4 and can start work on Milestone 5!  Slow and steady wins the race!

15 Runs in June

I'm counting this one done -- on a technicality... technically my "Month of June" started mid-week, So I'm counting all the runs that week instead of just the calendar mark.  Training calendar trumps actual calendar, right?
June Goals

90 oz Water Per Day

This one is a bit tricky -- I didn't necessarily track the water I drank... I just made sure to drink a LOT especially after a hot run or after being in the humidity for a while.
My Go-To mug is a 32 oz double wall insulated deal that I refill multiple times per day.  I also fill it to the brim with ice at each refill, so the actual water content may be significantly less than the 32 ounce mark.
Moving forward, I'm just going to keep pushing water...
The silver lining is that I haven't had pop (or soda if you're southern) in a long time.  Well over a month -- so this pushing water focus is helping in that arena.  I'm a long time diet coke addict, but realized it was slowly killing me so I've since reformed.  I now obsess over coffee, tea, and water.

Track with Integrity every day!

I nailed this goal -- and I can honestly say that it's so much easier when I'm doing the 21 day fix meal plan.  I usually can bust through all my portions for the day and still have points leftover.  Cooking at home helps with this too -- as it gives me more control over what I add to the food, how my meals are prepared, and how big my portions are.
I'm trying to fall into a rhythm with eating that goes something like this:
  • Breakfast - eggs or a smoothie
  • Snack - Protein shake if I workout in the AM, coffee + fruit if I workout later that day.
  • Lunch - Leftovers, a Big salad with lots of veg + protein, or avocado toast w/egg
  • Snack - Fruit usually, or I skip it if my lunch was sufficiently large.  My go to around this time if I'm starving is an apple with almond butter.... mmmm
  • Dinner - Protein + veg + carb,  I like to designate a carb to this meal time.  Something about having a carb at dinner helps me feel full and satisfied, even if it's just a half cup of rice.
  • Dessert/Snack - Date Rolls (homemade), Greek yogurt w/ honey & nuts, or skip if I'm full.

Goals for July

  1. Crush my Runs!!  (As planned)
  2. Be active every day!! (Workout, run, or active recovery - yoga, pilates, foam rolling, stretching)
  3. Drink up!!  (Water, water, water, unsweetened tea, water, water, coffee...)
  4. Hit Milestone #5 -- 180!
I've got this!

What are you goals for this month?

Did you crush your June Goals?

What's your rhythm for meals throughout the day?

Weigh in Wednesday #9

It's that time of the week again!  Where we run to the bathroom four or five times, strip down to nothing, and hold our breath on the scale...  Nah just teasing -- I only do two of those three things... ^-^

Goals from Last week

  • Eat single ingredient foods with every meal.
    • This went pretty well -- there were only a few meals (mostly when we ate out) where I wasn't super sure how the foods were prepared... I'm going to keep practicing this, and become more and more aware of how I'm fueling my body.
  • Workout out every day!
    • This definitely happened -- As my mileage increases, I'm feeling the mental fight starting where I feel like I shouldn't run and workout on the same day -- but strength training means I'll grow stronger!  This has to be a part of my routine!
  • Be Grateful each day
    • While I'm definitely grateful, this goal needs more practice as well.  I am blessed each day with so many thing - my husband, my job, my family, and my health - I'll have to incorporate a ritual to make this more of a focus.

Results from Happy Scale

Last week, my moving average was 190.9 and my 10-day-best was 189.6
This week, my moving average is 190.6 and my 10-day-best is 189.6... not much of a change, but I'm THANKFUL that it didn't MOVE UP!

This means my moving average is .3bs less than last week's!  It's also worth noting that my 10 day best weigh in (189.6) happened again this morning!  (Post run, so I'm sure I'm closer to 190.6 right now...)

I have to remember, when I feel discouraged or rushed, that these changes are for the rest of my life.  Health and nutrition are a top priority to me, because many of my long & short term goals require it.  There's no way around it.
The rate at which I'm losing weight and gaining strength don't matter as much as the rate at which my mindset has changed.

Points Breakdown

GOAL/ACTUAL/+ACTIVITY
Monday - 30/23/+6
Tuesday -30/38/+3
Wednesday -30/33/+7
Thursday - 30/40/+5
Friday - 30/33/+3
Saturday -30/46/+8
Sunday - 30/39/+0
Totals:  Goal - 210, Actual - 252, Activity - 32, Weeklies - 49
This means I ended the week with 39 leftover points!!!  Compared to last week's 22, this feels like I'm moving in the right direction!  Essentially, I only used 42 of my weeklies and no activity points -- so I think I'm at a place where I don't need to swap my activity points for food.
Somewhere on social media or youtube or somewhere, I heard someone remark about how they don't, "train for treats" -- because they aren't a dog!  I had never heard it put like this before!  They were arguing that the mindset of having to earn calories by working out crazily created a dangerous mindset where food had more power over you than it should.
Instead, this person argued, the focus should be on giving the body what it needs when it needs it (carbs after exercise to replenish glycogen stores, protein to build muscles, etc...).  The idea was that treats or cheat meals are earned by living a life that is otherwise healthy and nutritious.  This is like when all those nutritionists say that certain treats can be a one in a blue moon occurrence in an otherwise "healthy diet".
To me, treats aren't earned in the gym -- they are a part of my training plan and mental health.  Where's the fun in eating well and exercising if that means I can't indulge once in a while?  :-P

Goals for this week

  1. Eating - 21 day fix + WWSP tracking.  I decided that this week will be a SmartPoints week to see how I do with smartpoints.  I won't be trading in my activity points, but I'll still track them.  I'll also be saving most of my weeklies for my cheat meal - though I'm not entirely sure what it will be yet... we'll see.
  2. Exercise every day - I am currently running 4 days a week and will incorporate strength training, yoga, and pilates.  Becoming a ninja is hard work -- but worth it!
  3. List what I'm grateful for each day - I have a hobonichi planner, which if you're unfamiliar is a cross between a planner and a journal.  In it's pages for the next week, I will write what I'm grateful and be thankful to have the opportunity.

How did your weigh in go this week?

How did you strike a balance between nutrition and treats?

How do you stay mindful of all your blessings?

Weigh in Wednesday #8

It's weigh in Wednesday -- and I've been battling my internet service provider since yesterday.  It seems they cannot fix the issue over the phone and will have to send out a technician sometime between 1 and 4 pm today.  Luckily, I have no plans to do anything other than work out...

Goals from Last week

  1.  Eating 21 day fix plan
    • This went well, until Saturday -- we tried a new breakfast spot, spent the morning running errands, and then found a new spot for lunch (where I indulged in fried foods and cheese and carbs!).  I stayed within my points, but definitely didn't eat as "clean" as I usually do.
  2. Meditation
    • I barely meditated at all this week  o_o.  I'm going to reserve this practice for when Fall is in full swing, as I think it'll be more beneficial when I'm stressed or anxious.  For now, I'm just enjoying the sunshine and chill days.
  3. 21 day fix workouts
    • This went super well!  I've found enjoyment (and an immense feeling of pride) working out every day-- every. single. day.  On days when I run, I get two workouts per day, but I run in the morning and lift in the evening.  I've been feeling really recharged by the evening or afternoon workouts, so I'll keep listening to my body and pace myself if necessary.

Results from Happy Scale

Last week, my moving average was 192.0 and my 10-day-best was 191.0
This week, my moving average is 190.9 and my 10-day-best is 189.6!! WOOHOO!

This means my moving average is 1.1lbs less than last week's!  WOOT WOOT!
This is really encouraging, even though -- to be honest -- I was alittle upset from the scale's results this morning.  I weighed in at 193!  Last week I was eating really well and feeling really strong with my workouts, but then splurged for mostly the whole weekend.  Saturday was full of eating out and "treats", though I managed to stay within my PointsPlus allowance.

Points Breakdown

GOAL/ACTUAL/+ACTIVITY
Monday - 30/39/+3
Tuesday -30/30/+3
Wednesday -30/30/+2
Thursday - 30/36/+6
Friday - 30/32/+2
Saturday -30/62/+2
Sunday - 30/31/+5
Totals:  Goal - 210, Actual - 260, Activity - 23, Weeklies - 49
This means I ended the week with 22 leftover points!!!  Compared to last week's 8, this feels like a lot!

Goals for this week

My goals for this week are a bit different from last week but are in the same vein:
  • Eat single ingredient foods with every meal.
    • I'll be using the 21 day fix containers to ensure portion control, and keep in the spirit of the 21 day fix as far as the number of servings of each type of food.  So in a way, this is the same as my 21 day fix eating plan goals -- I'm just upping the ante in that for this week, I'll be trying to eat foods with a single ingredient.  Sweet Potatoes, Chicken, Beef, Broccoli, Lettuce, -- foods that are whole and clean.  This means avoiding those meals of mac and cheese from a box or super processed cheese crackers.
  • Workout out every day!
    • Though this week is going well so far, I feel that soon I'll tire of the 21 day fix workouts (?) Maybe?  If so, I wanted a goal that would keep me active and focused on strength/fitness but won't keep me in a box.  (When I feel boxed in, I tend to also get scatter brained and discouraged -- so trying to avoid this is best).
  • Be Grateful each day
    • There is so much to be grateful for in this world -- and remembering to be grateful first is so important to me.  I refuse to be one of those jerks that takes everything for granted!  [Today, I'm grateful for all of you readers -- just FYI!]

How did your weigh in go this week?

What workouts have you found that've worked?

Have you ever had to change up  your programs to keep things interesting?

Weigh In Wednesday #7

This past week's eating plan was based on the 21 day fix eating plan (4 servings of protein/veg, 3 servings of fruit/carbs, etc...).  Meals were designed around these while tracking using WWPP.
For exercise, I did my training runs but also incorporated the 21 day fix workouts.  My idea was to try this for one week to see how it felt... and I have to say, it felt pretty good.
I felt so good and so successful with this combination that I'm doing it again this week!

Goals from Last week

  1.  Eating 21 day fix plan
    • This went well!  I was not striving for perfection, but this eating plan emphasizes portion control (which I tend to cheat) and clean foods (power foods).  By trying to get all 4 servings of veg and protein and al 3 servings of fruit in each day, I found myself eating really well.  I didn't feel hungry, but when I felt like indulging - I just made sure it fit into my points for the day/week.
  2. Meditation
    • I took time to meditate most every day.  Some times it was just on the run - zoning out and letting the music flow.  Other times, I used the Headspace app and took a 10 minute meditation break.  It's getting easier, but as far as how it impacts the rest of my day, we'll have to see with continued practice.
  3. 21 day fix workouts
    • This went well!  I've found myself in different places each day -- a few days working out was a challenge, others it was a joy.  It was nice to just press the play button my DVD player and go.  I can definitely feel these workouts today though -- will need to stretch more.  With all this extra time in the summer, it's really a nice commitment to work out every day -- every. single. day.

Results from Happy Scale

Last week, my moving average was 193.4 and my 10-day-best was 192.6.
Today, my moving average is 192.0 and my 10-day-best is 191.0!
As far as progress towards my goals/milestones, my next goal is to get below 190 -- this makes 189 a milestone.  2 lbs to go!!
My weight trends are all "in the green" - meaning I'm trending down.  In the past 90 days, I've only lost 3.6lbs, which is due to gains and losses canceling out the effort.  I'm determined to keep these all green and moving!
The most exciting change is under Predictions, where it now says that I'll reach my 189 Milestone in 25 days (instead of over a Year!!).

Points Breakdown

GOAL/ACTUAL/+ACTIVITY
Monday - 30/30/+1
Tuesday -30/37/+3
Wednesday -30/34/+2
Thursday - 30/43/+5
Friday - 30/38/+7
Saturday -30/42/+6
Sunday - 30/54/+3
Totals:  Goal - 210, Actual - 278, Activity - 27, Weeklies - 49
This means I ended the week with 8 leftover points!!!  Compared to last week, this is such an improvement!

Goals for this week

My goals for this week are similar to last week -- because why change something that I feel good about and that worked for me?
  1.  Eat based on the 21 day fix and WWPP
  2. Meditate!
  3. Workout based on the 21 day fix workouts and include the training runs

How did your weigh in go this week?

What have you found that's worked?

Have you ever merged together programs like this?

Tuesday's Treats #7

It's Tuesday, which means I'm all about treats today.  After a weekend of girly fun, I feel like I've been well "treated" and am going to focus on self care as my reward of choice.

Treats from Girl's Weekend

My bestie and I had a girls only weekend that included a sleepover.  We watched movies, ate junk food, and got the glitteriest mani/pedi's EVER!

This morning's Treats

First up, my morning run.  I set my mind on the goal of running and set my music to motivate.  It was a hot one, but it felt SOO GOOD.
Once I finished my run, I made my recovery drink of choice -- a Protein Latte.  This is basically a scoop of EAS Lean 15 Protein Powder  mixed into iced coffee instead of water.  I ran out of iced coffee, so I used a scoop of my favorite Espresso powder and lots of ice and water.
For Breakfast, I made avocado toast with a whole fried egg + 1 egg white on top.  Something about the yolk + avocado is the best most amazing treat ever.  Adding a ton of Korean Hot Pepper Powder bumps it up a notch.  A generous sprinkle is REQUIRED for deliciousness.

Paired with some fat slices of Watermelon, my tummy was in heaven!

Afternoon/Evening Treats

This afternoon, I have to do some work and then go to a dinner meeting -- where I'll be treating myself to a meal of FISH!  Something I love to eat, but don't often cook for myself.  This is mostly because I can't stand the smell that lingers once fish is cooked in a small space, but partly because Hubby doesn't eat fish -- and I don't like making a fuss for something only I'll eat.
Once the meeting's over, I'll do my Upper Body Strength workout and have a quick shower before some one on one time with Hubby.
We'll end the evening with some movies that I've wanted to watch -- they've been sitting on my Netflix for what feels like 254 years.

How are you treating yourself this week?

What's your stance on glittery nail polish??

Do you eat Fish at home?  If so, how do you prevent the fishy smell???

Just for Fun Friday

Summer time means having lots and lots of fun!

This week, the fun is in the planning!

Hubby and I have been invited to spend some time with his folks this summer.  They are renting a cabin by a lake and it'll be my first time (even though they've been doing this for years).
My M.I.L. called today and booked the dates for the cabin while I booked dates for a rental car.  Now that things are reserved, it's so exciting!!
img_0160

Vacation = motivation!

Picture this, my M.I.L. on speakerphone chatting with hubby and I while I rummage through my drawers and closet to find my swimsuit.  Once I find the little bugger, I (of course) try it on.
Nothing like a reality check to MOTIVATE!
Knowing that I'll be seeing hubby's whole family [and knowing they'll be seeing me in my swimsuit as we spend time by the lake] is a great appetite and craving suppressant.  It's also great for workout motivation.

Girl Time

There's been a lot of girl talk and girl time as well.  This weekend, a very dear friend of mine will be coming over for mani/pedi/scary movie/sleepover time!  Hubby will be away for the weekend, so it'll be just us girls!!

What are you doing for fun today?
Do you enjoy having girl time?
When was your last vacation?  Do vacations motivate you towards healthy choices too?
Let me know (with some details please!) in the comments below ^_^

Marathon Monday #6

Happy Marathon Monday to you all!
Today marks the start of week 6 of my 26 week marathon training cycle.  You can find more details by clicking "Current Training Plan" above.

Here's how Last week Went

Planned -- 4 run/walk sessions of 35 min
Actual -- 3 run/walks sessions *pictures below from my Garmin Connect*
The south is being just pummeled by storms -- which means missed runs or runs in the torrential downpour.  While I didn't always avoid the rain this week, I did actively avoid the storms because lightning is real and real scary!

MM1MM2

This week's Plan

The plan is the same for this week as it was for last week -- Hopefully the rain will hold off and the storms won't scare me away!

How did your week go?
What are your goals for this week?
How do you handle the rain/storms??

Weigh in Wednesday #5

How'd it go?

This week was full of ups and downs and less than mindful or "on point" eating.  It showed on the scale.
+0, -0
Same as last week and that's unfortunate.

Here are the weight trends:

Goals for June

  • Get into the 180's
  • Drink 90 oz of water each day
  • Run 4 days a week
  • Track with fidelity daily!
I'm hoping that focusing on tracking this month will mean a better result each week.  There's a possibility of seeing family towards the end of July or early August -- and this is a huge motivator for me to lose weight.  I always want to look my absolute best and be my fittest self when around family, because there's always so much I want to do.  When I'm chunkier and less fit, I'm sluggish and just want to sit, talk, and sleep.

There's also another reason to feel motivated to run & eat right this month -- some friends are training for their first ever 5k race!  I want to be supportive, so I'm training as well and trying to find a race we can all do together.  I'm extra competitive, so pushing myself for an upcoming racing deadline is just the ticket to get me laced up even during these hot and humid months.

What are your goals this month?

How was your weigh in this week?

What keep you motivated during training cycles?

Just for Fun Friday

This week, Hubby and I are cooking new recipes for our Just for Fun activity.

We're preparing Steak Au Poivre with Mashed potatoes, onion rings, and an iceberg wedge salad for supper.  Such extravagance means lots of prep work, so I'm glad that the Hubster is on board for helping.

Planning these recipes and excitedly chatting with the Hubster, made me shift into Domestic Goddess Mode!!

Made some homemade applesauce

And some Chocolate Chip Cookies

Then passed out!

What did you do just for fun this week?

Do you and your spouse ever cook together?

What's your favorite recipe??

Weigh In Wednesday #3

Today, my weight is... The same as last week :(

How the week went

To further push myself out of my comfort zone -- and to hold myself fully accountable -- I'm going to do a points breakdown by day... *If you like this let me know in the comments below**
Monday - 37/30
Tuesday - 47/30
Wednesday - 35/30
Thursday - 31/30
Friday - 34/30
Saturday - 38/30
Sunday - 42/30
Seeing it all typed out, I see an improvement between this week and last week.
There was less eating out this week and that automatically makes staying on track easier for me.

How did your week go?

Are there any recipes I should try?

Any tips/encouraging words for me to keep me moving forward?

Just for Fun Friday

Today I'm having a movie marathon!  Hubby is away all day, so I have Netflix all to myself... this means I get to watch all the movies I've added to my list, but that hubby wouldn't particularly like.

Here's what I watched:

Death comes to Pemberley

Death comes to pemberly.jpg

I love Pride & Prejudice, so of course I had to watch this.  This little gem, which is a BBC three episode mini series, shows what happens (or one idea of what happens) after Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy have their "happily ever after" moment.
Verdict:  If you like Pride & Prejudice, it's Worth the watch!

Sugar Coated

logo-sugarcoated-laural.png
This documentary showcases a Canadian approach to the battle of the bulge.  Included are the works of Gary Taubes, Robert Lustig, Yoni Freedhoff, and Sami Inkinen.
It shows a peek behind the veil of the sugar companies and their tactics which draw an astonishing parallel to those used by the tobacco companies years ago...
Verdict: A Must SEE!

The True Cost

true cost
This humbling documentary follows those affected by "Fast Fashion" and shows that those inexpensive "throw away clothes" do have a higher cost -- in the form of sweatshop labor, environmental depletion, and pollution.
Verdict:  It'll make you think about your own consumerism and who it affects!!!

Hush

hush.jpg
This low budget thriller was a recommendation from a friend -- it's wonderfully done and keeps you at the edge of your seat!
The story centers around a lone female protagonist put in at an interesting disadvantage...
Verdict:  The ending was the absolute best!!!

What are you doing just for fun today?

Which movies should I watch next?

Have you seen any documentaries that really make you think??

Let me know in the comments below!!

Thursday Things

Here's a few thoughts and things for your Thursday:

Thirsty Thursday -- DRINK UP!

Going around social media right now are all these tags to Stop Drop and Chug... I think if you're reading this, you should drink up!

No Scale Victories

To battle some of my more negative self-talk, I've been trying to think of No Scale Victories throughout the week.  These act like a mental pat on the back every so often.  Today's NSV came at breakfast.
I was eating this week's breakfast of choice
-- a slice of spinach & cheese egg white frittata, low cal toast, and homemade unsweetened applesauce --

and halfway through I felt full.  Normally, I'd clean the plate and ignore how I felt.  Today, I put my fork down and pushed the plate away!  #Winning #NSV

Fit-spiration

Is anyone else obsessed with Instagram & Snapchat??  Just me?  Ok... -_-
I love scrolling through and getting ideas for meals, workouts, or just for motivation!

Accountability

This is something I'm really honing in on this month.  Holding myself accountable is important to my process because I tend to try to cheat or hide and that's what helped me gain all this weight!  Honesty and integrity are important to me and to my process.

Fidelity

Fidelity to the plan -- This week I'm really trying to not go over my weekly points.  It's been hard, because my ability to do activity is limited, but I've been creative with high volume/low points foods (hello fruits and veggies).

What are some of your things/thoughts this Thursday?  Share any comments below! I'd love to know what you think!

Weigh In Wednesday #1

To hold me accountable, I thought I should start "weigh in Wednesdays" like so many of my favorite bloggers.

Starting Weight:

When I first started my weight loss adventure in 2011, I was the heaviest I've been in my whole life.  It took a while for me to muster up the courage to jump on the scale and for good reason...
My weight in 2011 -- 225lbs.  On my 5 foot 5 inch frame, 225lbs looked HUGE!  My BMI at the time was 37.4 and I was binge eating at every meal.
Today, my weight is 192.2 with a BMI of 32.  I still have a ways to go before I'm no longer "obese" or "overweight" -- but my BMI is 5.4 points lower than when I started.  I'm also 32.8 pounds lighter than when I first weighed in.

Current Challenges:

My biggest challenge currently is negative self talk -- or lack of self-belief.  When I first started tackling weight loss, I just knew I could do it.  NO QUESTION ABOUT IT!  Only after some struggles in other facets of my life, did this turn off.
Binge eating or mindless eating or eating for comfort is another big challenge.  I discussed this a bit in my post about anxiety.
The last challenge I'm currently facing is hubby bubby -- I just feel that if he's on my team and we're tackling this together, we'll be stronger!   But this could just be me looking for excuses... which is the last challenge.

Non-Scale Goals:

  • Positive self talk!  "I can do this!", "I can do anything I put my mind to", " I've got this!", etc...
  • Eat mindfully!  So many times this past week, I've noticed that while eating, I'll feel really full pretty quickly, but then force myself to finish my food.  I hate wasting food!  This week, I'm going to actually stop at that first sign of hunger and safe the rest for later.  When I get hungry again, I'll go back to it.

Weight Loss Goals:

I'm going to get below 190 this month.  May is MY MONTH! :D

How did your most recent weigh in go?

What are your challenges?

What are your goals?

Leave me a comment/reply and let me know!  Also -- Do you ever struggle with negative self talk?   How do you cope with it?

Found this beauty which is 3 pp per serving!
What's your treat this week?
Do you have a favorite brand or flavor of ice cream?

Anxiety & Me

The seed of anxiety was planted in me when I was very young and has since blossomed and shaped me into the very anxious - type A person I am today.  My struggle with anxiety is a daily battle and I hope by sharing it, I can make that battle a little easier in the future...

My story...

I distinctly remember lying in bed as a child (couldn't have been any older than 5th grade) and FREAKING OUT about money.  My mind would race with questions: Did we have enough?  Was my family going to end up on the street?  Were we going to starve to death?  How would we make it?
As a young family, my folks started off with nothing -- except three little mouths to feed.  Their concerns about money would lead to discussions to plan out their finances which I would of course overhear.  We were on welfare at the time, my dad was using the GI bill to earn his degree, and my mom was working something like 3 jobs -- all menial and all at minimum wage.
I honestly don't know how we made it -- it had to be with great help and support from my whole family.
As I transitioned from elementary school to middle school, my family transitioned into a more stable financial place.  My dad got his degree and a better paying job (which he still works today, thankfully) and my mom was able to let go of her jobs and stay home with us kiddos.  This transition time was stressful, but not so financially worrisome.
By high school, my fears about money and general anxiety switched to my own path and how the F*** I was going to pay for college.  How could I possibly cover the cost of tuition?  What will I do for work once I graduate?  Who will be there to help if I can't pay for books?  How will I be able to afford a car and school?
It's interesting, looking back, at how silly it was to worry over things that used to consume my thoughts.  Life is life, I can say comfortably now.  It's not perfect, but things work out the way they are supposed to...

Anxiety manifests...

My anxiety manifests as panic attacks, nightmares, sleepwalking, sleep talking, and a complete inability to focus on anything else during peaks of anxiety.  My anxiety attacks are all consuming.
When something triggers my anxiety, I immediately feel my heart race, my ears ring, and my stomach drop.  It's all I can do to breathe in the moment.  I don't feel rational and I can't seem to pull myself out of it.

Things that make me anxious today...

#1 Finances -- still money, something about this took root so early in my life that it'll be a long time before I can shake it.  I'm terrified of not having enough, not making enough, etc...  I see these people who live day to day without a care in the world and I long for that -- and think they're crazy at the same time.  My financial goal is to be debt free and financially healthy - this means no more school loans, a house that's paid for, and a family that is secure.  I don't want any of my future/maybe kids to ever worry about money the way that I did/do.
#2 Car rides -- long car rides in my own vehicle (which I purchased straight off, no financing here because of my #1 anxiety producer).  It's not brand new, so it has its quirks, and I'm so terrified of a breakdown/accident that would cost time/money... This never used to be because my first car was a lease, so I didn't care if there were issues because it wouldn't cost me anything.  Now, though I don't miss that monthly payment, I'm super anxious on hot days (when the car could overheat), cold days (only before the engine heats up), or on trips that are over 30 minutes long (when the car could overheat or otherwise breakdown).  Interestingly, I don't feel any anxiety when we drive a rental (like we do for super long road trips of 6+ hours)... or someone else's car.  My hubby and I are both good/careful drivers so the actual driving of the car isn't what makes me anxious -- it's the fear of a potential breakdown that gets me...
#3 Hubby's Health -- my hubby's health scare of 2013 still freaks me out totally.  I wake up some nights just to hear him breathing.  He's still very overweight (as am I!) and I'm so worried that his heart won't be able to take the additional burden...
#4 Kids -- I used to say with confidence that I'll never have kids.  The very idea of having a kid terrifies me, mostly because of my #1 anxiety producer.  How can I afford kids?  The hospital bill alone is thousands?  What if they are sickly and need regular doctor's visits?  What if I lose my job and can't support them?  Could kids flourish in this current living space?  Would we have to move?  Would we have to get a minivan?

Impacts on my Health

Anxiety, or stress, directly impacts my health in so many ways.
First, my mental health -- when I'm having a panic attack or anxiety attack, it's like I fall into a mental well.  It's dark, it's hopeless, and it's bottomless.  It's so difficult for me to pull myself out of that well -- and until I can, I'm useless.  Sometimes, this means I spiral into a short depression and often feel not good enough.
Having a Korean mom means the voice in my head is often her voice -- and is usually very negative.  Most of my peers have cheerleader moms that always pep them up and praise them and make them feel capable of anything.  My mom had other talents and instead imparted upon me the wisdom of the pessimist.
I try to make good use of my pessimistic inner critic, as it allows me to see around corners and look for pitfalls in my plans, but when I'm feeling anxious this inner voice only acts to shovels coals into the furnace.  My father, who is also very anxious by nature and a bit a of a nay-sayer, adds to this by finding flaws in thinking and poking holes in ideas.  This actually helped to make me who I am today -- someone capable of planning thoroughly and account for any issues -- but it also help breed my feeling of being "not enough".
Fun fact: to this day my mom thinks I made the wrong choice in education, career, and marriage -- and tells me so, often.  She thinks like most korean moms -- I should have gone to school for business/accounting, become a business woman/accountant, and married a rich doctor/lawyer/etc... It's very hard to my self image, at times, to know that my mother isn't supportive of my life choices -- and plays into my anxiety.  I know I shouldn't let it get to me, and most days I don't, but on those "in the well" moments it's fuel to the fire.

Second, it impacts my weight and physical health!
After my anxiety attacks/panic attacks, I crave carbs.  I want sugar or bread or starchy carbs and usually eat them before I know what to think.  In doing some research, I found this article that talks about how stress may act to deplete the body's energy stores -- which means cravings after the time of stress passes.
If this cycle, of stress > calm > craving, occurs regularly, then it's easy to see how one could gain weight.  In an article from WebMd,  scientists say that for some people, eating can be a source of solace and could actually lower the feelings of stress.  If this is true of anyone, it's definitely true of me -- but only at times.  When I'm super freaking out about finances, I'll restrict food and circle the wagons -- no eating out, no fancy food purchases, only simple and cheap meals.  But that means when I earn a little bit more, or otherwise am able to relax about money, I want to "treat" myself with a restaurant or takeout/drive thru meal.
How screwy!  Actually typing it out makes me see how weird this pattern is... and makes me think back to where it might have started.
When my family was struggling financially, food was an issue.  Though not scarce, it was not "what we wanted" -- in that it consisted of cheap foods, government cheese/Peanut Butter, and very little protein.  In times when money was good, food was better!  There was more eating out at nicer restaurants, more quick trip through the drive through, and steak for dinner!!  Money = better food.  Security = better food.  Times of high stress = eating at home or lamer food choices.

Making progress

In order to make progress, I have to acknowledge the problem and seek help.  I've seen a counselor/therapist and recommend it for anyone.  Sometimes you can lean on a friend or family member that you trust for therapeutic conversations and that can help tremendously.  I learned, through this process, that worrying is really a waste of time and energy.  It solves nothing.  It helps nothing.  All it does is deplete my energy.
The anxiety/stress cycle isn't worth the toll it takes on my body or my brain.
To address times of stress, I'm supposed to call myself out! Like, "hey self, you're just freaking out -- which is a waste of time, energy, and brainpower!"   I'm supposed to accept that this is just a situation where I feel anxious and move on.  Loving myself through it (instead of being like, "bad self -- stop this!") is important for growth and improvement.

Do you struggle with anxiety?

Is it like me or different?  How?

I'd love to hear your story and how you handle it!
